Between mid 1943 and June 1944 the Finns were supplied with around 60 StuG III G’s. Known as the PS 531 or `Sturmi’ in Finnish service.Topfblende is German for pot-mantlet. (Saukopf is an American term)
8 were lost in action during 1944 against the Russians before the Finns negotiated an armistice and effectively joined the allied war effort. Both the square and boars head mantlet versions were used, with the early deliveries being of the square mantlet versions and the later versions the boar’s head version. They continued in service until the 1950’s.
The Finns made several field modifications resulting from combat experience. Shurzen were not supplied with their Stugs, and it was assessed that logs would fulfill the role of stopping hollow charge rounds. Further modifications included the provision of a large storage box on the rear deck, a new gun shield, fitting a Soviet LMG in place of the MG34 and modifying the drivers position. All of these are depicted on the prototype model shown.
For those who can’t wait this is a reasonably simple conversion of the QRF III G (GFV27).
