Following the conversation between Mssrs Curtis and Wright this appears to more accurately be…
Medium field howitzer 31M (Bofors, DIMÁVAG), 149.1 mm
The Bofors 15cm and 10.5cm were very modern guns, built to the then ‘new’ principle of ‘gun howitzer’. This is the same as used for the British 25pdr, the US 105mm, German 105mm, 15cm and so on.
Barrels tended to be longer than the more common howitzers left over from WW1 design. This enabled them to fire as guns in a more direct role but, unlike earlier guns, they were given the usual high elevation of the older howitzer types. The trail was thus designed to allow for this, with wheels of sufficient size to fit in with it.
What one ends up with, is a weapon that is accurate in the ‘gun’ role when firing at direct targets, or low elevation to whack bunkers and similar hard targets. But, when firing at high elevation it performs with the desired ‘dropping’ on target. Beside the design, they also used different charges to achieve these roles and could swap shell types too. The end result of all this is that one weapon could carry out the role for which they previously needed two.
